In 2022, U.S. News and World Report consulted with a panel of diet, nutrition and health experts and ranked diet plans.
They found that the most popular plan is the Mediterranean diet.
Mediterranean
The Mediterranean plan is akin to an overall change for the betterment of a person’s eating lifestyle.
The diet recommends eating a variety of foods at each meal, including fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans, legumes, nuts, spices and whole grains, often prepared with a healthy dose of extra virgin olive oil.
Fish and seafood are to be eaten at least twice a week. Eggs, poultry, cheese and yogurt can be eaten in moderation. Red meat is eaten sparingly.
Sweet treats are replaced by fruit, but it is acceptable to have a small portion of sweets on special occasions a few times per year. An occasional glass of red wine is also permitted.
According to the expert panel, eating small portions of a variety of nutrient-rich foods promotes heart health, reduces inflammation, and may prevent the development of type 2 diabetes.
The report describes the Mediterranean diet as family friendly. It can also be easily converted to vegetarian, vegan, or gluten free diets, and it is filled with budget friendly foods.
