Penguin Life has scooped Saturated Facts: A Myth-Busting Guide to Diet and Nutrition in a World of Misinformation from doctor, nutrition researcher and TikTok “sensation” Dr Idrees Mughal.
Commissioning editor Jamie Birkett bought world all-language rights directly from the author. The book is scheduled for publication in March 2024.
Mughal has 1.8 million TikTok followers where he is known as Dr Idz and posts videos which expose “various pieces of bogus health advice proliferating online”. In Saturated Facts Mughal covers veganism, the keto diet, carbs, gluten and dairy to “present the very latest scientific research to readers in a clear and digestible way”. The book is structured around “myth busts” and, alongside the aforementioned topics, explores topics such as weight loss and inflammation and new science in chrononutrition, the microbiome and the link between mental and physical health.
Birkett said: “We’re hugely excited to be publishing Dr Idz’s first book on the Penguin Life list, building on his incredible work highlighting the role of preventative medicine and combatting online misinformation when it comes to what, how and when we eat. This is a book not only for Idz’s millions of followers who flock to his socials for devastatingly witty and well-informed videos, but for anyone wading through the sea of contradictory health advice. Saturated Facts will be this generation’s essential, comprehensive guide for everything diet and health related.”
Mughal added: “This book is a response to the overwhelming tide of dietary misinformation found online. With over 60% of people in the UK now turning to the internet for health advice, it’s become increasingly concerning that anyone can broadcast medical advice to millions with just a click. Recognising the urgent need for accurate information, I’m thrilled to present Saturated Facts — a definitive guide that debunks the most pervasive diet myths circulating online and offers evidence-based truths in their place.”
