What is keto and what are the benefits?
A keto, short for ketogenic, diet favours very low-carb, high-fat whole foods. When eating this way, you drastically reduce your carb intake and the body goes into ketosis, a metabolic state that science shows can be effective for weight loss and other health conditions.
When your body is in ketosis, it relies less on carbs and becomes more efficient at burning fat for fuel. Additionally, studies show that following a keto diet can significantly reduce your blood sugar and insulin levels.
The result? Many experience reduced appetite and body fat loss. Keto has also been shown to improve metabolic health and blood pressure, potentially reverse type 2 diabetes and fatty liver disease — and more.
To achieve ketosis, you’ll need to keep your daily carb intake to 20 or fewer grams of carbs per day. That’s about 5 to 10% of your calories per day and the rest would come from protein and fat.
